Forum Title: Actual height of windows
When they talk about actual height of windows are they referring to the ends of the outside of the entire product? Not the outside of the windows themselves? I was going to place an order for this product. ThermaStar by Pella 10 Series Vinyl Double Pane Annealed Single Hung Window (Rough Opening: 30-in x 54-in; Actual: 29.5-in x 53.5-in) The old window frame (entire product box) is 54 tall by 30 wide, measured inside and same dimensions outside. NOTE: The wood on the inside looks like a stud but it's actually part of the window box. There's a small gap before the stud on the left.

You said you want to remove the trim. The trim is the molding around the perimeter of the window and it pretties up the transition from the window to the walls. You do not need to remove it to work on the window. That window is relatively modern. Look in the other side of the window or at other windows in your house to see what type mechanism it uses to hold up the sashes. In most cases you will not need to remove molding or disassemble too much to replace the tensioners. The big problem however will be finding replacement tensioners but the first step is identifying what you have.

How important is depth? The new window is 2.68. The actual depth of the wall is about 4 1/2. It looks like the nail fin is set in a bit. That would mean that I'd have to build some wood framing on the outside I guess, unless the window is installed from the outside.
